The Revd Henry Ellershaw

/images/masters/Henry Ellershaw.jpgThe Revd Henry Ellershaw was Master of University College from 1919-1932.

He was appointed as Classics lecturer in 1889, and became the first holder of the Chair of English Language and Literature.

Ellershaw held the post of Master at a difficult time for Castle: during the inter-war period, serious threats to the fabric of the building led to an ambitious fundraising campaign to prevent the Castle collapsing into the river.

From 1930-1932, Ellershaw also held the post of Warden of the Durham Colleges.
