Durham Castle - Fortress, Palace, College

Richard Brickstock, ex-Curator of Durham Castle, who is also a University College alumnus, has written a coffee-table book on Durham Castle. It is well illustrated in colour and covers the history of Castle as a fortress, palace and college. It is published by Jeremy Mills Publishing (Jeremy is also a Castle graduate). The book also contains a foreword by distinguished writer Bill Bryson, a recent Chancellor of the University.

The book costs £14.99 for a high quality paperback or £29.99 for a hard back copy, and buying it through Jeremy Mills Publishing is significantly cheaper than through Amazon or other alternatives.

Proceeds go to the University College Durham Trust to fund our current projects, which help the continual development of the College.

You can buy the book online from Jeremy Mills Publishing.

University College Durham: A Social History

Researched, written and self-published by Edgar Jones (Castle 1947-1951).

‘This book has an interest far greater than merely to former students of the College, or even of the University… a very good read’ (Castellum review)

Much more than the narrow chronicle of one academic institution through over 160 years, Edgar Jones’ book University College Durham: A Social History is an account of the social and educational changes that occurred during this exciting period. A period which saw the fastest and most far-reaching changes in the social order. The story of these changes, as seen through the vicissitudes of one College is told in a brisk entertaining way.

Proceeds from the book go to support the University College Durham Trust.

Please send a cheque for the 'University College Durham Trust' for £14.00 (+£3 P&P) to the Development Office, University College, Durham Castle, DH1 3RW, along with your name and address. Please mark the cheque with 'Social History' on the back.

Payments can also be taken in cash at any alumni events, or when visiting Durham. Please let us know in advance by emailing castle.alumni@durham.ac.uk
